[ For someone who's coming to find he can play around with time in certain ways, he's certainly lost track of it over the past few days since an awkward text conversation between himself and a certain second Robin.
For the record, he hasn't been ignoring him. Honest. He's just... ok, maybe he hasn't been sure what to say since Jason had more or less blown him off when he'd possibly gone and done a misstep with his seeming so nonchalant about the idea of getting coffee being anything more than... getting coffee. Ever since that night they'd met up in the park and later ended up in bed because of a misfired text of all things, Barry hasn't been too sure just what to do with that. Jason is Bruce's... son. Adopted son. New partner as well with being Robin and he has no idea if sleeping with him was an overstep in some invisible boundary and a line that he shouldn't have crossed given who Bruce is to him. Should he not have? Would Bruce judge him for it if he ever finds out? Things Barry worries about given his own relationship with the man, both "professional" and... friendly.
But Barry still remembers that night and how, for a short-lived moment in time, there was some semblance of normal for them both in more ways than one and he'd been... happy. Genuinely. All it took was Jason Todd of all people. Who knew? Then again, Barry does seem to have a knack for being the softer touch to a sharp edge; just look at a couple rough around the edges certain people he knows in his life.
He's hoisting his bag over his shoulder, strap pressing into the jacket he wears over his t-shirt and making his way for the door of Bruce's place to head out. The meeting with the lawyers had given him a bit of hope when it came to his father's case, Bruce, unsurprisingly, knowing The Best Of The Best when it comes to things of this nature and he appreciates the man offering him his help with this.
And there's another thing to add to the whole "hey is it ok if your adopted son and I banged?" train of thought.
Distracted with thumbing through the papers in the folder he has, he nearly misses reaching for the front door to leave when he finds it coming to pull open itself and, looking up from the papers... ]
[ So Jason has probably been ignoring Barry. Not really ignoring him, because there haven't been any more messages from him to ignore, but after the stupid mistake he made the other day, he's not about to go ahead and make another one. And really, it's fine, he tells himself. It's not as if they had said anything more than a maybe they'd hook up again sometime, he just tried to push it forward for no reason.
Which... he's pretty sure is typical of him, so he tries to let it go. He'll see Barry when he sees him. It's no big.
But he remembers that night for everything it was, too. It was nice, and peaceful, and not something he's used to. Maybe that's why it bothers him even more. It got to him more than most any other thing could... but he doesn't want to make a big deal out of it, and he's not gonna get all sensitive about it, even if that's exactly what he is.
So he figures it's whatever, and lets it go, which is why it stops him in his tracks when he opens the front door to the manor to head inside, nearly colliding with Barry heading out. ]
[ Jason lives here and so of course he'd be coming back at some point. It's just he didn't think it'd be now and he suddenly doesn't know what he should say. If anything. Should he? He should since they're not like... broken up or something because they were never a thing, it was just one time but then that last text conversation between them...
Realizing he's staring a little too long as Jason, he points a thumb back over his shoulder and blinks a couple times. ]
Bruce and I were - and I was leaving now... not that it sounds like that? I mean... no. It's not, he was just...
[ If he keeps his stammering, he's going to make it seem like he was getting plowed by Bruce or something. So, taking a breath, he holds up the folder with the name ALLEN written on the tab of it. ]
He's helping me with my dad's case. Hooking me up with some lawyers of his.
[ And he's grateful for that, looking the front of the folder over again. ]
He's got somewhere else to be now, so. I'm just... [ As fingers tap along the spine of the folder. ] heading out.
He tries so hard to sleep during the flight, or read, or play video games, or listen to some sick beats... but he cycles through all of them and he's too excited to concentrate on anything, leaving him kind of a restless mess through the whole flight.
When they land, he's the first one out of his seat, even though they still have to wait, but it's fine. He's in Central Fucking City to see his boyfriend for his birthday, and nothing can bother him now.
He's happy. The only other time he's ever been this happy before was when he first put on his Robin suit, which is in a bag that he takes down from the overhead compartment as he makes his way off the plane, heading over to the area where he knows Barry must be waiting for him. ]
[ Despite it only having been not even twenty-four hours since they last spoke, Barry's been looking forward to this. Not because he and Jason haven't been able to see each other prior to this trip — Barry always zips over whenever Jason wants to see him or has some free time — but because Jason is coming to visit him this time. In Central City. His home.
Fingers are tapping anxiously at the side of his leg as he stands there with others waiting for family, friends, and loved ones. Anxious because this is the first time (to his knowledge) that Jason has been here to Central City and, also, because it's the other's birthday— his boyfriend's birthday and he wants everything to go smooth for him and be a good time for once.
So when he spots Jason? He smiles like sunshine and waves to him, making his way over to meet him halfway, a little spring in his step as he goes. ]
[ he's needed some time to think about everything jason had said — everything that had suddenly happened much like that other time when a miscommunication between them had happened. it's not that he didn't think they could ever have those sorts of moments again. it's just... he thought it might be more different. especially since jason's birthday and everything they had felt and said.
so he takes a bit of time. not too much, a little worried about the truth that might come with what jason had said about heading out right away. so he sends a message off. hoping jason will respond back to it. ]
[ Jason feels like shit. All fucking night. He doesn't get to go out with Batman either cause Dick and Gar and Rachel are here too, and Bruce just wants him to stay and get his crap together so they can leave early in the morning.
Great. Fucking great.
It's whatever though, and he knows it. It's not like Bruce is telling him he can't be Robin anymore, just that he could use this time away to train and get better at working with others.
He's more angry at himself for the shit he pulled with Barry, and he knows he flipped out on him, but what the fuck. He hates it when Barry takes Bruce's side. As if the guy has a reason to send him away. All everyone ever fucking does is send him away. It's fine, though. Whatever with that too. He tells himself that if Barry is done with him and doesn't want to talk to him again... so what. so what?
Jason knows that's bullshit though. It's not so what. It's everything. It's so much of everything that if he looses that too... fuck. He just needs to be okay with it. It's like everything else. Temporary.
Still, his fingers are curled around the necklace Barry gave him when he falls asleep that night.
And is woken up way too fucking early by Dick, telling him they have to get on the road if they're going to make good time. He's tugging his phone off the charger when he ping of a text comes through, and he lets out a long breath, shoving his phone into his back pocket to ignore it.
Then taking it out a moment later because he can't ignore it. it hurts his heart too much. ]
[ That last text is left on read for no more than a twenty— maybe thirty seconds before he's there outside the Titans Tower. He'd had to excuse himself from the party he'd been at for his colleague and quickly change into his flash costume before sprinting over here. But now that he's here, he's quick to change out of it and waits for Jason to come down like he'd said.
He has no idea what's sparked this. Sure, Jason has moods, but. Who doesn't? He figures something must have happened to sour his mood and the text he'd sent had just been the icing on the cake for whatever it was that's bothering him. The fact that whenever they do converse over text often leads to miscommunication when Jason isn't feeling so hot or insecure about something, is why Barry is here to talk this out — to see him for himself and if he's reading anything wrong.
When he does finally come down, Barry is standing there. Eyes worried, but lips pressed in a thin line. Fingers holding the strap of his bag slung over his shoulder, he sighs. ]
[ Jason hadn't exactly expected get up out of bed again today, feeling sore and tired from pummeling sand bags for more than an hour. So he's kinda disheveled, pulling on some clothes he had tossed onto a chair yesterday, along with a hoodie that he can get lost in, and heads out of the tower.
He doesn't know why Barry is here right now. Why he insists on coming over here when Jason knows all he's done is treat him like shit. No matter how hard he pushes, Barry pushes back, and now he's leaving Titans Tower, spotting Barry right where he said he would be and heads over.
Jason stops when he gets close enough, looking at Barry for a moment before he averts his eyes, then quickly steps into Barry's space, curling into him as he hugs him tightly. ]
[ It's been a week of missed calls, short messages back and forth, with the two of them just being busy as hell and not being able to connect with each other. Jason hates it, and he feels shitty about it, wondering if it's because of his whole move, or the Titans, or the two of them just being out of sync with each other... or if it's the whole long distance relationship thing even though Barry has his super speed.
Normally Jason would probably have a meltdown over this disconnect, or fuck it up somehow and make things worse, but since he's been with Barry, he's been learning that things aren't always the way his head tells him they are, or that people can be trusted, they don't always walk away or turn their backs on each other. He's been starting to learn that it's okay to feel all the shit he feels, and that it doesn't make him a bad person.
He owes Barry a lot.
Another thing he owes Barry for is that his boyfriend didn't get pissed off when he found out Jason had pretty much dug up everything he could find on him- but the plus side of this was that he also found out his birthday- not that he couldn't ask, but Jason's a fan of surprises, and he knows Barry likes them too, considering the perfect birthday set up he had for him. Jason knows he can't top that, but he doesn't really need to. All he knows is that after a week of shitty communication and the need to see Barry so much that he's about to burst, he tells the Titans they're gonna have to survive without him, and takes off to Central City. Gar and Rachel sound utterly relieved by this, and he's pretty sure Dick is about ready to get rid of him too. Doesn't matter though, cause in a handful of hours he'll be with the person he loves.
With all of Jason's charm (he's not always a rude boy to other people, ok??) he manages to find out Barry's work schedule, and has a bouquet of flowers sitting on his desk waiting for him, with a note that just reads: Happy Birthday. Hope you'll let me take you out on a date on this special day. Meet me out front after your shift is over. <3 Your secret admirer.
after Barry's shift, Jason is sitting on a stoop across the way with a small duffel bag, waiting to see if he'll come outside to see who it is. ]
[ So. Someone has finally turned the big two-six. Twenty-six years old now and now just a little bit older than a quarter of a century old. How time... flies.
There hadn't been much planned in the way of doing anything for his birthday, truth be told. It's a weekday, for one, which makes it a work day, for two. Coupled with the fact that he hadn't been able to get much in the way of contact with Jason and, well, sort of not in much of a mood to do anything but go home. Maybe he could see what Bruce was up to? You know, if he wasn't doing Bat Things that is. Or Clark. Clark was someone he could possibly see... if he's not busy with Lois. Or being Superman. Yeah. Arthur, Vic, and Diana are also possibilities but, again, everyone's got their own Thing in their own Place with their own Lives and yeah, sometimes it's tough being a superhero. For a number of reasons. Who would have thought?
He's packing up his stuff for the night when he sees the flowers and, naturally, thinks they've been placed there by mistake because... obviously? When does he ever get flowers, let alone random gifts? However, when he takes a second to read the card, he pauses because... yes, it's his birthday, but secret admirer? That's... hmm.
Still, he takes them (after making sure they're just flowers) and heads his way out of the building with curious glances made around him as he goes. What he expects? Some looming figure hiding in a bush or something. Maybe eve a prank, possibly. What he doesn't? Is Jason with a duffel bag and both the surprise and the confusion of such a thing is written all over his face as flowers gently drop down to his side and his steps slow as he makes his way closer.
By the way, he's absolutely dressed in a gray suit, white dress shirt... and running shoes. Yeah. ]
i've been thinkin about you a lot today. about last year when i went to your place for the first time. i still wear that necklace you gave me for my birthday. i know, it's stupid. but you know how stupidly sentimental i am. hope you never told anyone about that. it's so embarrassing.
anyway. i'm sorry, i know this is really out of line. i don't even know if this is your number anymore. but if it is. i hope you're doing ok. i miss you.

libra baby birthday! ♎️🎈🎁🎉
Normally Jason would probably have a meltdown over this disconnect, or fuck it up somehow and make things worse, but since he's been with Barry, he's been learning that things aren't always the way his head tells him they are, or that people can be trusted, they don't always walk away or turn their backs on each other.
Yeah. ]
How— what— hi?

i've been thinkin about you a lot today. about last year when i went to your place for the first time. i still wear that necklace you gave me for my birthday.
i know, it's stupid. but you know how stupidly sentimental i am.
hope you never told anyone about that. it's so embarrassing.
anyway.
i'm sorry, i know this is really out of line. i don't even know if this is your number anymore.
but if it is. i hope you're doing ok.
i miss you.
