[ It's been a week of missed calls, short messages back and forth, with the two of them just being busy as hell and not being able to connect with each other. Jason hates it, and he feels shitty about it, wondering if it's because of his whole move, or the Titans, or the two of them just being out of sync with each other... or if it's the whole long distance relationship thing even though Barry has his super speed.
Normally Jason would probably have a meltdown over this disconnect, or fuck it up somehow and make things worse, but since he's been with Barry, he's been learning that things aren't always the way his head tells him they are, or that people can be trusted, they don't always walk away or turn their backs on each other. He's been starting to learn that it's okay to feel all the shit he feels, and that it doesn't make him a bad person.
He owes Barry a lot.
Another thing he owes Barry for is that his boyfriend didn't get pissed off when he found out Jason had pretty much dug up everything he could find on him- but the plus side of this was that he also found out his birthday- not that he couldn't ask, but Jason's a fan of surprises, and he knows Barry likes them too, considering the perfect birthday set up he had for him. Jason knows he can't top that, but he doesn't really need to. All he knows is that after a week of shitty communication and the need to see Barry so much that he's about to burst, he tells the Titans they're gonna have to survive without him, and takes off to Central City. Gar and Rachel sound utterly relieved by this, and he's pretty sure Dick is about ready to get rid of him too. Doesn't matter though, cause in a handful of hours he'll be with the person he loves.
With all of Jason's charm (he's not always a rude boy to other people, ok??) he manages to find out Barry's work schedule, and has a bouquet of flowers sitting on his desk waiting for him, with a note that just reads: Happy Birthday. Hope you'll let me take you out on a date on this special day. Meet me out front after your shift is over. <3 Your secret admirer.
after Barry's shift, Jason is sitting on a stoop across the way with a small duffel bag, waiting to see if he'll come outside to see who it is. ]
[ So. Someone has finally turned the big two-six. Twenty-six years old now and now just a little bit older than a quarter of a century old. How time... flies.
There hadn't been much planned in the way of doing anything for his birthday, truth be told. It's a weekday, for one, which makes it a work day, for two. Coupled with the fact that he hadn't been able to get much in the way of contact with Jason and, well, sort of not in much of a mood to do anything but go home. Maybe he could see what Bruce was up to? You know, if he wasn't doing Bat Things that is. Or Clark. Clark was someone he could possibly see... if he's not busy with Lois. Or being Superman. Yeah. Arthur, Vic, and Diana are also possibilities but, again, everyone's got their own Thing in their own Place with their own Lives and yeah, sometimes it's tough being a superhero. For a number of reasons. Who would have thought?
He's packing up his stuff for the night when he sees the flowers and, naturally, thinks they've been placed there by mistake because... obviously? When does he ever get flowers, let alone random gifts? However, when he takes a second to read the card, he pauses because... yes, it's his birthday, but secret admirer? That's... hmm.
Still, he takes them (after making sure they're just flowers) and heads his way out of the building with curious glances made around him as he goes. What he expects? Some looming figure hiding in a bush or something. Maybe eve a prank, possibly. What he doesn't? Is Jason with a duffel bag and both the surprise and the confusion of such a thing is written all over his face as flowers gently drop down to his side and his steps slow as he makes his way closer.
By the way, he's absolutely dressed in a gray suit, white dress shirt... and running shoes. Yeah. ]
[ Jason knows he's taking a chance here. Barry probably has other plans tonight, especially cause they hadn't really had a chance to talk about this at all. But that's the thing about surprises. Never really know how they're gonna turn out. If he has other plans, that's cool. He can just hang out and wait till whenever. Sure, he's Barry's boyfriend, but sometimes it really does feel like they have two separate lives.
It wasn't so bad when Jason was still in Gotham, but now? Now it all feels different. Still, he's glad he's here in Central City. He likes it here.
Jason also realizes that it might be creepy, leaving random shit on Barry's desk, but it can also be romantic? Maybe? Jason isn't sure he knows too much about being romantic, but he tries.
He checks his phone about a hundred times when it's nearing the end of Barry's shift, his leg bouncing nervously as he sits and waits. Once he sees Barry exit the building, looking curious and skeptical, he tries to play it cool, but his heart is practically in his throat. Fuck. Barry looks like the cutest nerd ever. Jason stands when Barry gets closer, giving him a crooked grin as he hoists his bag over his shoulder. ]
[ Surprise is certainly right and Barry feels all sorts of things at seeing the other β at seeing his boyfriend out here like this. So much, in fact, that he hurries over with a light jog and tucks his flowers under his one arm, carrying his bag with his other hand. ]
Hey, baby.
[ Reaching out to cradle the side of Jason's face, he leans in to kiss him then. Completely without a care that he's outside his work building and they're in public. More or less. Pretty much? In public. But he doesn't really care.
Smiling against those lips, he licks his own over before he pulls back just enough to look to Jason, head tilting as he gives him a quick once over. ]
What are you doing here? You didn't say anything about coming out. I would have taken the day off if I knew.
[ Jason's kind of relieved that Barry isn't with a bunch of other people, or looks like he's going out to a party- though he could just be heading home to change and go back out, but either way, Barry is here to greet him, and that's really all Jason could have hoped for.
And Barry looks happy to see him, which is always good too. Jason still has his doubts a whole hell of a lot of times, but when he hurries over, all of that slides right to the background of his thoughts and he's just really fucking relieved to see his boyfriend again, happy and healthy and glad to see him too. ]
Hey.
[ Jason moves to him too, leaning in close to kiss him back, hands moving to Barry's waist to hold him. Feels like it's been forever somehow, and now everything feels alright again. ]
I wanted to be here for your birthday. Wouldn't have been much of a surprise if I told you, now would it? Hope that's okay.
[ The huff of laughter Barry gives when Jason asks if it's ok that he be here is warm and sweet and he noses at the other for a brief moment, smile there bright on his lips. ]
Are you kidding? Of course it's ok. Getting to see you like this β on my birthday no less, is like the best thing I could have ever asked for.
[ Maybe it's cheesy of him to say, but he means it. One hundred percent. He always does.
A hand smoothing down Jason's arm, he laughs then β sheepish β and pulls back some to scratch at his cheek with his bag in his other hand. ]
Wow though I... am totally not dressed for hanging out? Getting to see me in my other work clothes.
[ Jason likes cheesy- well, now he does, because he has a reason to like it, and it's all Barry. being there for people is always a tricky thing, especially when you're not sure they want you there, but this is different. it always is with his boyfriend.
Jason smirks at just how cute and sheepish Barry looks, leaning in to kiss his jaw.]
I dunno, they're kinda cute. You look all... business man. So professional.
[ Even though he's in sneakers but, you know. A for effort?
Reaching out, he takes Jason's hand and squeezes it, smile still bright there in his lips. ]
You wanna come back to my place? I actually have a new one if you can believe it. Like... actual apartment kinda deal. I still like my little hideout that I have, but. Had to be a bit more professional with the job, you know?
[ Jason curls his hand around Barry's, feeling utterly relieved that he's back here again. that they're together again. feels like it's been forever and a day. ]
An actual apartment? Holy shit, you really are going all pro, huh. Like some kinda proper adult. Yeah, I wanna go back to your place.
[ he's glad Barry kept the other place too though. he really, really likes that one. it's so Barry, and it's a special place to him too, having spent his own birthday weekend there. ]
It really is kind of like I'm an adult or something, right? So weird. When did that happen?
[ Huffing a laugh, he gives another squeeze to Jason's hand and tugs him along before he stops and looks back to him. ]
Uh... how did you get here exactly?
[ He obviously knows Jason has (had??) a bike and all given that time they went on it together, but. He didn't bring that with him, did he? Pretty sure Dick doesn't have his own Nightwing plane? ]
I dunno, man. But I hope this doesn't mean you're gonna drop your hot, young boyfriend.
[he leans in and drops a kiss against Barry's cheek, cause he's kidding. he's mostly kidding.]
I took a plane, man. Just like last time. My flight got in earlier and I found out when you were gonna get outta work so I've just been hanging around getting some shit ready.
So no bike then? Well, little disappointed there, but. You just being here makes up for that. [ A beat. ] Disappointed because... you look hot on that bike. In case you didn't know.
[ And he absolutely DOES wink to the other before he huffs a laugh and tugs on his hand to follow him for the closest bus stop he takes. Barry Allen? Own a car? Yeah no. He can drive, sure. But no car for the moment. Too slow and all. Not that a bus is any faster. ]
So... what kinda shit exactly were you getting ready?
[ disappointed? ouch. Jason hates that word, probably more than any word in the English language, but... when Barry follows it up with a compliment it's not so bad, and he lets out a soft laugh, squeezing his hand. ]
Guess that's just something you're gonna have to look forward to next time you come back to San Fran.
[ Jason is still there. he was hoping to be back in Gotham by now, but... nope. which is why it's even nicer that he got a chance to come here to Central City. ]
Oh, you know. Just some birthday things. Nothing fancy. I thought maybe we could have like... a moonlight picnic thing. Found a cool place to just hang, but I didn't know you moved so it's near your old spot.
We can uhm... borrow a car for the night? I'll put it right back once we're done.
[ Raising his brows, Barry laughs a little sheepishly when Jason gives the suggestionβ plan? of a moonlight picnic. The weather isn't bad and it's not raining, so. Definitely doable just... not anything he thought he'd ever do in his life? But hey, he likes surprises and new things and if that's what Jason really has in mind for them, well. He's for it. ]
That is... something I did not have on my bucket list but am absolutely going to put on there just to scratch off.
[ Smiling brightly over to the other as they go, he blinks then in surprise a little before he lets his gaze wander off some, head tilting. ]
Wait. By borrow a car do you mean... [ and the look he gives the other is more than enough to show that he's thinking of "stealing" being the idea that Jason has. ]
It's... yeah. I realize it's probably a shitty plan. It could have gone wrong if it did rain tonight, or if you weren't in the mood. Or yeah, it's kinda late and you probably has work tomorrow too, right? But I didn't have a lot to go on, or work with, and I thought maybe it would be romantic or something.
[ he's not usually the rambling type, but here he is, rambling away, scratching at the back of his neck as he watches Barry. ]
Just for a little while. They won't even know it's gone. I used to boost cars all the time, I know what I'm doing. I'll even drive carefully.
Ok, first off? No. Not a bad idea β the picnic thing. It is... ridiculously cute and sweet and sentimental and nothing I ever thought anyone would ever do for me, so. Really good, I like it.
[ He makes sure to go with that first as he comes to stand in front of the other, brows raised and bag held there at his side. ]
Second, I need to let it be known that I do not encourage nor approve of the borrowing of someone's car with boosting it because, you know, The Flash and all.
[ Though he makes sure to say that last part a little quietly. ]
However, [ And here he hums a little. ] If it's... just for a little while and you return it all fine and dandy then... I guess so. Yeah.
Okay, good. That's good. I was hoping you'd think that.
[ but now that Barry comes to stand in front of him and gives him that eyebrow raised look, he remembers that Barry is probably less like him and more like Dick or Bruce, who would ten thousand percent not be cool with his plan, and chastise him for it.
which, okay. fair enough. it's not like Robin is supposed to be stealing cars either- and he doesn't anymore. he doesn't do any of that shit anymore, but this isn't stealing.
he brightens a bit at Barry's however, though, and then full on grins when he agrees to it, relieved that he isn't going to get an earful for his suggestion. ]
Just for a little while and I'll return it without a scratch. Come on.
[ Jason snags Barry's hand this time, intertwining his fingers as he pulls him down a side street, going into surveying mode as he checks out both the area around them and the line of parked cars till he finds the right one. ]
This one's good. They're parked for the whole night, there's no alarm, and this model's easy to start up. It's an older car, less fancy shit to get around. Plus, there's no camera's on any of the buildings that'll catch us at this angle.
[ When he's pulled, he follows, keeping an eye on their surroundings while Jason checks out their "available options" for the night. Honestly, some part of him can't believe he's going along with this? But another part tells himself it's fine and he trusts Jason to know what he's doing with all this.
Which, speaking of. ]
Wow, you... really know your stuff about all this, huh?
[ Not wanting that to come off as though he's chiding him, he gives Jason's arm a squeeze. ]
Probably comes in handy when a quick getaway is needed, you know?
[ Well. For people that aren't him. However, sometimes he gets shot and can't heal as quickly as he'd like and so being lifted or carried or, in this case, driven around, helps a lot. Not that he's expecting any shooting to be going on while they're here enjoying their night. ]
[ honestly there's a part of Jason that can't believe Barry is going along with this either, and this niggling feeling of him being a terrible influence and an even worse boyfriend is there in the back of his head. but... Jason's never turned down a bad idea, and this isn't too terrible, considering. considering what, he's not sure, but it'll be fine. ]
Yeah, I guess I do. Helped me survive for a while, you know? Parts are money, and money is food. When my mom was still alive it helped her out too. She wasn't exactly taking care of shit so I had to.
[ he goes on, suddenly like an open book as he gets the car door open and climbs in, reaching across to open the door for Barry as well. he tosses his bag in the back, then gets to work on starting up the car. ]
They're both pretty different so I like 'em in different ways. But I prefer the freedom of my bike.
[ Barry listens as he slips into the passenger seat, his own bag set in the back while he watches Jason get to work in starting up the car. He hasn't really spoken much about his past aside from this and that and Barry hasn't pushed or pried. So when Jason offers that up, he takes it as a sign of the level of trust he has for him. ]
You look good on your bike. In case I already didn't make that clear.
[ He smiles, hand reaching over to smooth along Jason's arm and he leans in then to press a kiss to his cheek. ]
Thank you for coming out like this. Really. I'm glad you're here.
[ it's definitely a level of trust, and comfort and just being in the right state of mind right now, doing what he does best, and having someone to actually be with while doing so. ]
This is a motorcycle fetish side of you that I never knew existed till tonight.
[ he teases, but he's glad that Barry thinks he looks good on his bike. he's definitely going to let that get to his head just a little bit.
he gets the car started just about the same time Barry leans in to press a kiss to his cheek, and he reaches out, brushing his fingers through his boyfriends hair, sliding his hand to the back of his neck so he can pull him in for a more proper kiss. ]
Nowhere else I'd rather be, babe. I've missed you a lot, you know.
[ Letting his lips brush over Jason's for that proper kiss, he pulls back after a moment to lick them over, teasing the other on him before he settles back in his seat.
Reaching for his seatbelt, he pauses then, an idea touching his thoughts. ]
You know... [ Glancing to the backseat, he grins a little over to Jason, a shrug. ] ...could always get a little cozy back there later on if you're up for it.
[ damn, he's missed these kisses. feels good to have his lips pressed against Barry's again. he's all smiles when the other pulls back, letting his hand travel across his face before it drops.
he puts his own seatbelt on, pausing at those words, glancing back over his shoulder as well before his gaze meet's Barry's with a sly grin. ]
Oh, I'm up for it. It's a pretty roomy back seat, too...
[ fuck, he loves this guy. loves him so wholeheartedly. he can't help but laugh, leaning in for another quick kiss before he gets to pulling the car out of the spot and heads down the street. ]
[ He points in a certain direction before he tosses a smile over to the other. ]
How are things back with the others?
[ By asking, he's hoping it's not anything that's going to sour this lighthearted mood they have going on right now between them in this stolen borrowed car. But he knows it had been a difficult thing for him at first β how Jason hadn't wanted it and felt betray, in a sense, with being shipped off with Dick and the others.
Thankfully, at least, with how fast Barry is, any amount of distance between them is never really All That Much. It's just more a matter of needing time for it. Something which he can't always find enough of for himself, it seems. ]
[ Jason takes off the way Barry directs, hoping he's a good navigator. he kinda has to be with all that speed, right?
the mood doesn't sour at Barry's question, mostly cause Jason doesn't want to let anything fuck up this time they have together. even with how fast Barry is, they've both been busy and it's been kinda rough. ]
It's alright. Dick has us training basically day and night as if some kinda fucking apocalypse is headed our way. I'm like bro, we just fought the last one, I think we're cool for a while. But who knows, I guess.
[ he shrugs, turning when Barry directs him and keeps driving down the road at a very reasonable speed. ]
libra baby birthday! βοΈπππ

You look good on your bike. In case I already didn't make that clear.
[ He smiles, hand reaching over to smooth along Jason's arm and he leans in then to press a kiss to his cheek. ]
Thank you for coming out like this. Really. I'm glad you're here.

Reaching for his seatbelt, he pauses then, an idea touching his thoughts. ]
You know... [ Glancing to the backseat, he grins a little over to Jason, a shrug. ] ...could always get a little cozy back there later on if you're up for it.
[ Wink wink if you catch his drift. ]

he puts his own seatbelt on, pausing at those words, glancing back over his shoulder as well before his gaze meet's Barry's with a sly grin. ]
Oh, I'm up for it. It's a pretty roomy back seat, too...
[ fuck, he loves this guy. loves him so wholeheartedly. he can't help but laugh, leaning in for another quick kiss before he gets to pulling the car out of the spot and heads down the street. ]
Which way am I heading?

[ He points in a certain direction before he tosses a smile over to the other. ]
How are things back with the others?
[ By asking, he's hoping it's not anything that's going to sour this lighthearted mood they have going on right now between them in this
stolenborrowed car. But he knows it had been a difficult thing for him at first β how Jason hadn't wanted it and felt betray, in a sense, with being shipped off with Dick and the others.Thankfully, at least, with how fast Barry is, any amount of distance between them is never really All That Much. It's just more a matter of needing time for it. Something which he can't always find enough of for himself, it seems. ]

the mood doesn't sour at Barry's question, mostly cause Jason doesn't want to let anything fuck up this time they have together. even with how fast Barry is, they've both been busy and it's been kinda rough.
